Plant Care
Has taking care of flowers and plants ever become a challenging game of trial and error for you?
Ever wondered if your new friend is happy or not? Does it need more sunlight, water or perhaps plant food would help?
If you have been lucky, your plants are still surviving. Sorry if it’s otherwise. But you have learnt your lesson so let’s begin to explore a little about how you can keep your plants hale and hearty throughout their life.
The plants you have in your house were once residents of their natural habitat. They pass through a tiring process of plucking, trimming, repotting and polishing before they are brought in your care. Therefore, they are completely dependent on you for their survival. It is your duty to provide them with an environment as close to their motherly abode.
Let’s start with some basics:
- Sunlight is needed by green plants to synthesise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. This important process of photosynthesis involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a by-product. Indoor plants require less direct sunlight as compared to outdoor plants. Some indoor plants may also need it but there are those that can survive without it too.
- Watering the plants needs special attention. Both over hydrating and under hydrating can damage the plant’s roots. Some plants need constant humidity while other need dryer soil for proper growth. You neither want to deprive your plant or drown it in water.
- Fertilizer or Plant food can also play a vital role in helping the plants grow. However, you have to be very careful as an overdose can kill the plant’s roots. Additionally, it is important to specify which plant-food is recommended for a specific plant. A one-applies-to-all policy should therefore be avoided.
- Groom and clean your plants regularly. Use plant-specific tools for cleaning, trimming, cutting, changing the soil or repotting them. Repotting also needs to be done very carefully to avoid damaging the roots and stem.
- Potting mixes are available at nurseries and have different combinations of real soil, pot soil and other ingredients to help the plant grow. Not every combination is suitable for every kind of plant. Ask your seller when you buy a plant about what combination would suit it best to avoid using the wrong one therefore, wasting money and the plant’s life.
