Growing Green Roof
A Growing Green Roof is a roof on top of a building which is covered with greenery and vegetation. This may be done either by planting plants directly onto the roof or through growing in containers. Also known as green roofs, growing roofs are becoming extremely popular in developing countries in order to combat the heat factor.
Growing Green Roof Purposes:
- absorbs rainwater
- provides insulation
- creates a habitat for wildlife
- help create a relaxing and aesthetically pleasing landscape thus, decreasing human stress
- lowers urban air temperature
- mitigate the head island effect
- brings the natural functions of plants to filter water and treat the air in urban areas
Growing Green Roof Environmental Benefits:
Green roofs provide both insulation for heat preserving in winters and heat reduction in summers.
Reduces Heat Loss within the Building
In a study by Brad Bass of University of Toronto it was observed that this environmentally friendly manner helps reduce heat loss in winters thus, saving energy consumption. Additionally, it adds mass and thermal resistance value.
Reduces Heat Absorption into the Building
Aids in reducing cooling loads of a building by 50-90% if it is placed in a terrarium by evaporative cooling. Interestingly, if a large number of building shift to green roof theory it can even drop the city’s overall temperatures drastically.
Creates a Natural Habitat
Assists the urban wilderness drive Acts as a Natural Air Purifying Agent
Filters carbon dioxide and pollutant away from the atmosphere diminishing diseases such as asthma. Additionally, green roofs filter other pollutants and heavy metals out of the rainwater too.
Insulates Building for Sound
The soil on green buildings helps block lower frequencies and the plants planted onto them block higher frequencies.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
LEED Points
Living roofs can earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. It is a green building program developed by a non-profit US Green Building Council working on a set of ratings for design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings world wide. Thus, it creates awareness and responsibility of the use of natural resources.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide.[7] Developed by the non-profit U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) it includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighbourhoods that aims to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently.
Increase Agricultural Space
Individuals can grow their own food. In addition, to being self-sufficient in producing their own food, house owners can sell their extra produce in the market.
Green Roof Combat the Urban Heat Island Effect
A normal building absorbs the sun’s radiation and re-emits it as heat, as a result of which the urban areas are 4 degree Celcius warmer than the suburbs.
Natural Habitat
Having a green roof creates a natural habitat for plants, insects and other animals which is otherwise limited within populated cities.
Increases the Life of the Roof
Studies show that Green and growing roofs enhance the life of a roof by almost 200%.The process of waterproofing, with is the base for growing vegetation shields the roof from ultra-violet radiation and physical damage. In another estimate it is believed that the by the installation of a green roof the real estate value could increase by 7%.
